چکیده

This letter presents a near production-ready algorithm to retrieve the height of biomass burning smoke and mineral dust aerosols as part National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA)’s Deep Blue aerosol data product suite. It utilizes enhanced spectral coverage achieved by using colocated from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Ozone Mapping Profiler Nadir Mapper (OMPS-NM), both aboard Suomi Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite. In particular, 412-nm top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance VIIRS ultraviolet index OMPS-NM are used determine single-scattering albedo absorbing simultaneously. Constraints on optical depth at 550 nm surface for band provided operational product. Wildfire layer heights obtained over North America, where plumes often stretched thousands kilometers, shown agree with those Cloud–Aerosol Lidar Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) measurements, an uncertainty generally within 1–1.5 km. new set will be included in upcoming Version 2

Evaluation of VIIRS Land Aerosol Model Selection with AERONET Measurements

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a next-generation polar-orbiting operational environmental sensor with a capability for global aerosol observations. Identifying land aerosol types is important because aerosol types are a basic input in retrieving aerosol optical properties for VIIRS. The VIIRS algorithm can automatically select the optimal land aerosol model by minimizi...

A new algorithm for detecting cloud height using OMPS/LP measurements

The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP) ozone product requires the determination of cloud height for each event to establish the lower boundary of the profile for the retrieval algorithm. We have created a revised cloud detection algorithm for LP measurements that uses the spectral dependence of the vertical gradient in radiance between two wavelengths in the visible and ne...

Aerosol Layer Height Over Water from O2 A-band: Mono-Angle Hyperspectral and/or Bi-spectral Multi-Angle Observations

Success of NASA’s Phytoplankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission 1 depends critically on atmospheric correction to retrieve inherent properties of oceanic waters. 2 Previously unexplored UV wavelengths are the most challenging to correct due to large signals 3 from Rayleigh and aerosol scattering. The dominant Rayleigh component makes it difficult to 4 separate absorption by ...

TROPOMI’s Aerosol Layer Height Algorithm: Interpretation of the retrieved height parameter

TROPOMI’s Aerosol Layer Height algorithm currently assumes a simplified aerosol profile in the form of a single layer of homogeneously distributed aerosols. The height of this layer is retrieved by using height information from the O2 A band. It is not straightforward to interpret the retrieved height parameter, since true aerosol profiles are typically complex and heterogeneous. We used radiat...
